How to buy a watchwinder |

One question always asked by watch owners is: How to buy an automtic watch winder ? Below are some considerations involved when buying a watchwinder: 1. PRICE is NOT the only one... Many users have the misconception that all watch winders are the same and as such, whichever is cheaper is better. No, not all automatic winders are the same. If you have not read our article on "Automatic Watch Winders vs Spinners", please read this article by click here. Yes, there is a difference between different types of winders on the market. Lower quality winders, using unreliable parts or motors or gear system, or using cheap or low grade wood or plastic, are generally a little bit cheaper. But using these low quality watchwinders would be more costly in the long term. Not only will those lower quality winders not last as long as a high quality watch winder, but they could possibly over stress your watch's moving mechanism in the long term. Thus the minor initial savings could very well end up costing much more in the future. So price should not be the only consideration when buying a watch winder. Of course, a winder should not be unreasonably over-priced either. One should look for an affordable winder yet of high quality. After all, you have spent hundreds or thousands of dollars or more on a fine piece of wrist watch. Why take chance on a low quality unreliable and unproven watchwinder, when an affordable yet high quality winders like ours would provide you with a long term peace of mind. 2. Functionality and Compatibility.... Many watch owners own more than one automatic watch. So when you buy a watch winder, make sure it has the full functions that could accommodate all watch brands' winding specifications. Different watch brands could require different turning mode and different functionality. So it is always prudent to buy a watchwinder with all turning modes build in: clockwise, counter-clockwise, and Alternate mode. Alternate mode (turns clockwise and counter-clockwise automatically in a factory preset program), is required for many watch brands such as Rolex. Also, to prevent over-stressing, a factory programmed "Turn and Rest" electronic program is essential so as to minimize the chance of over-stressing your watches' main spring moving mechanism. As such, it is best to select a winder equipped with the above functions. So that no matter what brands of watches or what types of automatic watches you have, now or in the future, the winder can accommodate your watches' specifications. 3. Material Used... To many users, wood constructed winders seem to be all the same without much difference. However, the quality, grading and types of wood used can vary vastly. One should investigate the quality of wood used before making a buying decision. For example, all our watch winder products use only premium grade "Aged" oak wood. "Aged" wood means the wood are dried and aged with a special process in the factory, so that most if not all, trapped moisture inside the wood has been kiln-dried. If moisture is not being kiln-dried, after certain period of time, the wood would very likely warps and could result in cracking in addition to the unsightly appearance that could result hereof. Moreover, it could also cause the hinge or lid or other parts mis-aligned or not in its proper working order. Also, some advertised low priced watchwinders use certain kinds of cheap unreliable thin particle board or untreated wood as casing. This will save in manufacturing cost and could result in lower pricing. However, the tradeoff is that in general, they will not be endurable. Also, in certain parts of the country such as the east coast where temperature and air moisture is relatively high in the summer season, such untreated wood or particle board would easily be affected; resulting in warping or "air bubble" being formed on the casing. 4. Craftsmanship... To further protect the wood to enhance its durability and longevity, certain kinds of coating is essential. For example, all ERS watchwinder products are hand coated and polished with up to 15 layers of Polyurethane coating. Each layer of coating is applied by hand and when it dries, it is hand polished to smooth finishing. This process is repeated for the 15 layers of polyurethane, as such, it takes close to a month for each ERS watch winder to be manufactured. The result is a smooth glossy piano-like exterior finishing which is not only minor scratch and heat resistance, but also can resist vast change in temperature and moisture. Resulting in an almost maintenance free long lasting winder product. While many other cheaper watchwinders would compromise on the process by simply spraying a layer of polyurethane to the surface. At first glance or simply by looking at the photos, the difference might not be that obvious. However, once they are place side by side with the ERS watch winders, the difference in quality and aesthetic appearance is obvious. It is a matter of time before those low quality untreated wood winders will show its deficiencies. Buy with confidence....
